Colette Moreau was a hat-maker's apprentice before she became the best listener in Port Vesper. Customers talked to her as they would to a mirror, and she remembered everything. By twenty-five she had a network of cloakroom attendants, bellhops, valets and night-shift drivers who told her what their passengers said. She calls them her "friends of the hallway." She does not steal secrets; she simply stands where they are dropped. The Old Man valued her for one reason: she was the only person in the city who warned him when she disagreed. She wears a collar of fox fur, a gift from her first customer, and answers to Fox with a faint smile. She forgives mistakes, never forgives surprises, and has never been late to a conversation she needed to hear.
“You will do it. I have already told them.”
