In the winter of the great fever, the parish gravedigger fell ill and fourteen-year-old Tommy Doyle took his shovel. He dug eleven graves in nine days, learned the names of each, and carried a violin case to every service because the parish had no other musician. He kept the habit. He still plays at wakes, quietly, with the case beside him. The Old Man heard him one evening, learned the story and said, "A man who can do that can do anything." The harbor calls him Gravedigger, partly for the winter and partly because when Tommy arrives somewhere trouble is usually already finished. He grins easily, sings badly, remembers every birthday of his crew and sits at the table without a word until it is time to speak. Then he says exactly one thing.
“Everyone gets a quiet place in the end. I just like to be on time.”
