Harold Whitmore was a rising prosecutor until the day he won a case and understood the law had let a guilty man walk and an honest one hang, both within the letter of the statute. He resigned that week. Since then he has defended people who ought not to have needed defending, and a few who did. His method is not trickery. He reads the law more carefully than the men who wrote it, and finds the places where they forgot to close a door. The Old Man called him "the architect of exits." Harold keeps a small notebook where he writes a single sentence after every case: what the law missed. It is almost full. He eats lunch at the same table every day, never accepts a bribe, and gives away what he cannot use.
