Dr. Jack Callahan spent three years in a field hospital during the Long War, where speed decided everything. The soldiers named him Butcher, half in jest and half in awe, for how fast and cleanly he worked: no flourish, no hesitation, no wasted motion. Behind the name was a man who learned every patient's first name and wrote each of them a letter when they went home. After the war he opened a clinic in Port Vesper and made one rule: nobody is turned away, and nobody is asked who sent them. The Old Man brought him an injured courier in the middle of a snowstorm and returned a week later with a handwritten thank-you and a standing invitation. Jack wears a spotless apron, carries a worn leather bag and says the same sentence before every procedure, in the same level voice.
“Hold still. I am fast, not gentle.”
