Vittorio Santangelo inherited a title, a crumbling villa and a mountain of debt from a family that had once governed half a province. He sold the villa, paid every creditor in full and kept only the title, because he believed some names must be carried even when they cost money. He speaks four languages, none loudly. His manners are so impeccable that people do not notice they have been outmaneuvered until the contract is signed. He wears a silk top hat and a dark cloak lined with deep red, and he carries a sealed scroll that no one has ever seen opened. The Old Man called him "the only aristocrat who understood work." Vittorio never raises his voice. He has never needed to. The furniture does it for him: a door closes a little harder, a chair is set a little closer.
“I never raise my voice. The furniture does it for me.”
