Murat Karahan stepped off the ferry at nineteen and went to work on the piers, where a man is measured by what he lifts and what he refuses to drop. He lifted more than anyone and complained about nothing. What the other hands remember is the winter he refused a full pay packet while his crew went unpaid, and walked out with every one of them behind him. Six months later the Old Man hired them together, as one body, because he needed a foreman nobody could frighten and nobody could buy. The docks started calling Murat Reis: the one who steers the crew. He taught the apprentice boys to read a bill of lading in the loading shed and has never lost an argument against a man who was lying. When the Old Man died, Murat claimed nothing for himself. He asked his crew who wished to stay behind. Nobody did; together they walked up to the Mansion gate. He fights the way he lifts: straight, in one motion, so the others do not have to.
“Come to me. Not them.”
