Yuki Tanaka was a keyed-line operator at the Central Wire Office, the last office in the city still running telegraph lines, and the only one there who could distinguish operators by the rhythm of their keys. The Old Families still pay for those lines, because nobody thinks to tap them. By twenty-six she could tell whose hand sent which message, and whose was a stranger imitating it. When the Harbor War's last winter cut half the city's lines, she rewired three offices in a night, using a spool of copper and a candle. The Old Man gave her a room above the Mansion library and the title of "the quiet ear." She wears headphones even at dinner, keeps a small sparking box on her desk and answers messages with a single clipped line. Her colleagues say she is always listening to something just outside their hearing. She considers it the most honest form of company.
