Karim Haddad sat on the bench for sixteen years and left it in a single afternoon, after a verdict he believed in was set aside by a telephone call. He did not leave the law; he took it somewhere it could not be bought. Port Vesper's families began bringing their disputes to him informally, and then, with increasing frequency, bringing them first. He sits in a small oak-paneled room above a bookstore, has never been late to a hearing and never accepts a gift larger than a cup of coffee. His rulings are famous for their brevity. The Old Man called him "the only honest man in a city that liked to be fooled." Karim speaks in measured sentences, writes by hand and keeps a gavel on the desk that he has never once struck.
“Objection. Sustained. By me.”
