Story

Tariq Al-Mansour comes from a family of coast-to-interior traders who measured distance in markets rather than miles. He learned arithmetic from his grandfather and patience from the falcon his grandfather trained: a bird that watches for hours and strikes once. At twenty-two he took over the family's routes, and in four years there was not a single disputed account. Rivals tried to catch him in a mistake and found only a ledger so clean it embarrassed them. When the Harbor War ended, rival houses sent their children to the Old Man's table as pledges of peace, and at sixteen Tariq spent six winters at Ambrogio Sarti's house. The Old Man never once treated him as a hostage; he taught him chess and let him win only when he had earned it. A debt of affection, not of money. The Letter found him at a harbor café with the falcon on his arm. He read it, offered the bird a piece of dried fruit and said, "Then we are going." He hits where the enemy hides: behind its front line.
