Hideo Kuroda was a harbor pilot, the person who climbs aboard a ship at the mouth of the bay and guides it through the fog to a berth. For twelve years he brought ships in on nights when the lamps could not be seen from the bow. He learned to read fog as other men read faces, as something that hides little for anyone paying attention. The pilots called him Sis, the Mist, because he left a ship so quietly the captain often did not notice the pilot gone until the anchor was set. He is courteous, speaks softly and keeps a small lantern lit in every room he enters, so that others will not be startled by him. The pilots' guild had been one of the houses sitting across from the Old Man in the Harbor War, and when peace came, nineteen-year-old Hideo was sent to live in Sarti's house as the guild's pledge. The Old Man hired him once as a pilot, on a night that decided the war's last winter, and called him "my son" in front of the whole guild. Neither spoke of it afterward. The Letter reached Hideo at the pilot station. He lit the lantern, read it, and walked out into the fog.
“Fog hides nothing. People just stop looking.”
