Story

Rafael Costa grew up in a fishing village where boys learned weather before they learned letters. At seventeen he sailed out into a gale that kept the coast guard in port, delivered medicine to an island clinic and returned with the mast bent. The village called him Storm: a sailor who goes toward the weather rather than away. He turned that talent into a trade, running goods along the coast faster than any inspector's patrol boat, and never carried anything he would be ashamed to name aloud. He laughs easily, which is why people underestimate how carefully he plans. Every voyage is rehearsed; the speed comes from preparation. His family's coastal clan had fought the Old Man in the Harbor War. At fourteen Rafael was sent to the Sarti house as a pledge of peace and spent two years on land, which he considered a punishment, until the Old Man gave him a boat. Years later the Old Man needed a captain for a dangerous night and found Rafael already waiting at the pier, boat fueled, logbook open. The Letter reached him mid-voyage, delivered by a gull-spattered pilot boat. He read it over the wheel and turned the bow.
